![]() It forgets the sensory things that made MoM work. What this is a somewhat faithful and wholly underwhelming reskin of one of the greatest games of all time, but that doesn't make it one of the greatest games of all time. These things may sound like quibbles, but they aren't. Sure, you can kind of see how many shields a thing has, but it doesn't pop. And the information visualization-which made the first game there-has been eviscerated. And the pixel art is legit better than what's on display here - it's just not very pretty, hard to tell what's going on, and doesn't feel 'magical.' That's not just that it doesn't always tickle the nostalgia bone - the wizards look too realistic, the spell effects aren't demonstrative enough, the units are confusing and not scary. The hokey music or weird sound effects? Replaced. That feeling of ridiculous horn music playing whenever you build something? No more. The stat system and exploration immediately make sense. Like most reviewers I'm a MoM vet and have played for decades. I hate to be a sourpuss, but something went wrong here. But at the given price it is just right, leaving themselves room for sales and what not. If they went for $50-60 then yes, I agree that would have been too much. But I have spent hundreds of dollars over the years looking for that MoM clone that fills right but never found it, sure I could go back to the original one but I wanted one that was updated and now I got one. Also it's an officially licensed MoM game not a derivative so yes you are going to have to pony up a bit extra when you get talking about things like IP licenses. It is very nice to look at and love all the finer details that went into it.Īs far as the pricing, people are always going to complain but $40 USD, is not bad for an updated game that MuHu put so much love and care into. Quick Review - I have only played for 30 minutes, so I don't have a lot of time logged into the game, but I will be putting many more hours in I can guarantee it, Right off the bat as was intended the game smells like the old game in a very nostalgic way, but also has a new car smell to it that only adds to the product. Once again this is pre-mid game on medium map, have no idea what to except once you get to mid/late game and get into the slog that usually goes along with those parts of the game, however honestly I haven’t seen any reason yet to believe the game isn’t optimized well enough to have major issues. Eventually I am sure we will get pre-rendered caches that will greatly help decrease the load times. All in all other than some slow initial loading times, not crazy though, the game ran very smoothly. The default controller settings is the right trackpad for cursor control, the left trigger and right trigger buttons are used to confirm and also to back out of steps. I left everything at default and other than the loading I never seen the game dip below 40FPS and I made no adjustment attempts. Like many games not listed as verified, MoM is at least early on in the game very playable. Second 30 minutes with it, this time on my Steam Deck:
